This is a beat-up by British press and is not true.  This is one of the long-standing requirements applied to those that require a Schengen visa.  UK Passport holders are Schengen Visa exempt and so those requirements are not applied.

For some reason, with holiday season approaching, the British press feel it necessary to try and stir up anger and worry, and call them “new requirements” - which they are not.  These requirements have been in for at least 10 years or more.

Certainly, a newspaper article of fake news. The people who read such tripe are worse. Stop reading such newspapers and you cut off your support for lies and bad journalism. But, most of you believed lies painted on the sides of a red bus only a few short years ago and refuse to reject them. Consequently, you get what you bought into. 

I hear through a reliable grapevine Brits “overstaying” their 90 days will be charged from 1st October 2024. You heard it here first. And so much for Spain refusing the Brit spending power!

Curious about this. If you overstay the 90 days, what's the penalty? Is it just a fine or are there limitations for future visits?

Depends really on how long you overstay and indeed your reasons for overstaying.  It will range from just a fairly stiff fine up to a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years (please note, it wouldn’t be a ban on just coming back to Spain, but to re-entering any of the 27 Schengen member countries - France, Germany etc etc)
